SDEIS Professor Young H. Chun Secures $40,000 Research Grant from the U.S. Air Force

BATON ROUGE- SDEIS Professor Young H. Chun successfully secured a $40,000 research grant from the U.S. Air Force to conduct a groundbreaking study using military aircraft maintenance data. He will receive the grant money in monthly installments over a period of five months.

Chun’s project titled, “Survival analysis of aircraft failures during training and combat missions,” will analyze military aircraft maintenance data provided by the U.S. Air Force and develop various time-to-failure models. Aircraft reliability will be measured by the cumulative flight hours and the number of sorties for various training and combat missions. As the sole principal investigator, Chun will use statistical models to successfully predict the failure rate of aircrafts and determine preventive maintenance schedules. The results of the study will be published as technical reports for maintenance workers and reliability engineers in the U.S. Air Force Material Command.

As the holder of Cherie H. Flores Endowed Chair of MBA Studies, Chun has published numerous papers in top-tier journals, such as Operations Research, Decision Science, IIE Transactions, Journal of Operational Research Society, European Journal of Operational Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Quality Technology, Quality Engineering, American Statistician, and the Journal of Applied Statistics. He previously received research grants from the Board of Regents Support Fund and Louisiana Educational Quality Support Fund, but it is quite a high accomplishment for a business professor to receive a research grant from the federal government.

Professor Chun’s primary research area is in the probabilistic modeling of managerial decision problems in operations, marketing, and finance, having mainly focused on the development of theoretical models. He is especially excited, though, for the opportunity to apply statistical theory to a real-world situation, particularly where it is related to national defense.
